Help Us Rock Earth Day
Rock the Earth is seeking businesses to collaborate with on the 41th
anniversary of Earth Day – when events and celebrations take
place throughout the week of April 15-24. By participating in a
coordinated campaign, our impact can be more significant. Please
consider donating a portion of your business' sales throughout the week
to Rock the Earth, or pick a specific donation day to let your
customers know you are committed to doing your part to help create a
sustainable environment. In addition to cash donations, there are other
ways that you can be a part of this effort. Please call our office at

Who's Your Planet Defender?
Since
2006, Rock the Earth has presented an annual Planet Defender award in
three categories to inspirational defenders who uphold the ideals that
Rock the Earth believes in. In 2010, RtE recognized Bonnie Raitt in the "Musician" category, Laurie David (Stop Global Warming) in the "Community Leader" category, and Louie Psihoyos
(Ocean Preservation Society) in the "Grassroots Activist" category.
These winners were chosen from among dozens of nominations made by Rock
the Earth members and friends.
We
are once again asking for nominations of those individuals who embody
Rock the Earth's mission of Defending the Planet One Beat at a Time.
Keep an eye out for those folks who you feel are helping to protect our
planet's most precious places, and nominate them for the prestigious
Planet Defender Award. Send your nominations to:

Key of Green
In
the final weeks of winter, nobody likes to be slipping on the sidewalk
or falling down the front porch. Deice, but do so in an eco-friendly
fashion! Conventional deicing chemicals, such as salt (sodium
chloride), can contaminate local waterways, ruin vegetation, harm pets
or wildlife, and even eat away at public infrastructure.
Kitty
litter, sand, wood ash and bird food are all eco-friendly alternatives.
Calcium magnesium acetate is a very popular deicer for the
eco-conscious, due to its biodegradable, plant-friendly and non-toxic
properties. Magic Salt and Ice Clear are growing in recognition as well.
Don’t
forget to crank out the shovels either. If the ice can be shoveled away
with a little elbow grease, there’s no need to turn to deicers at
all!

All Apologies
Last month, we were very pleased to feature the fine work by two legendary Rock photographers, Jay Blakesberg and Dave Vann.
We neglected to give their fabulous photos credit. Jay provided us with
the whimsical photo of RtE partners ALO; Dave donated the action shot
of Disco Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner. We apologize for not
acknowledging them.

What Rocks Your Earth: Steve Sweney (ekoostik hookah)
Steve Sweney, of Ohio-based ekoostik hookah
and The Spikedrivers, has been playing guitar since the early age of
10. He picked up the instrument after 7 years of classical piano
lessons (beginning at age 3), and encouragement from his father to
carry on the family’s musical tradition. Although he continued
with piano lessons, the guitar was where his passion was, and
thankfully so.
In
1991, Steve, playing lead guitar, became a founding member of ekoostik
hookah, a band known for its improvisational treatment of psychedelic
rock and roll, blues, funk, jazz and bluegrass. They released their
first album, Under Full Sail, that same year, and six more since. In
1994 ekoostik hookah put on their first homegrown festival,
Hookahville, known today as one of the best Midwest music festivals. On
March 12, they will be celebrating their 20th anniversary at the
Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. When Steve is not shredding the
guitar with Hookah, he can be found playing with the raucous, down and
dirty, country-fried rock ‘n’ roll band, The Spikedrivers.
What environmental issue(s) do you consider to be the most critical at this time?
It seems as though an even more urgent matter than global warming is
the impending oil shortage crisis. Or should I say the
all-the-oil-in-the-ground-is-gone crisis. Most experts seem to agree
that peak production has passed, and that it'll all run out within a
couple generations. Since virtually everything is made from petroleum
products, including plastics (obviously), all efforts need to be made
for the switch to renewable energy as soon as possible, and reduction
of costs to the consumer needs to be made possible. We can take many
cues from Iceland, which has made a massive conversion to geothermal
and hydrogen. If the U.S. is one of the last to prepare for the
inevitable, we'll all be hunting wabbits. The panic inflicted on our
society's way of life is unfathomable.
What has inspired you to combine environmental activism with your art?
Not enough it would seem. But we do provide recycling at our
Hookahville festivals, and the mountains of trash saved from landfills
is significant. And we've certainly played a lot of festivals for
different environmental causes.
Where is your favorite place in nature to go to find solace or inspiration?
Probably a certain point in Death Valley way off the beaten path, that I haven't been to in a LONG time.
